Perimenopause and menopause usually affect women between 45 and 55, though it can happen earlier — and symptoms can begin years before periods actually stop.
Symptoms arrive early — and change over time
One of the first signs is usually a change to periods, which may happen more or less often, with heavier or lighter bleeding. Symptoms usually last for 7 to 9 years and can shift — hot flushes and night sweats may later be replaced by low mood and anxiety.
It affects more than periods
Hormonal changes can also affect heartbeat, bone density, urinary symptoms and bleeding patterns, and many women experience anxiety, loss of confidence, brain fog and other mental health symptoms they don’t always connect to hormones.
A blood test isn’t always needed — but it helps rule things out
Many GPs can confirm perimenopause from symptoms alone, though a blood test for hormone levels may be used between ages 40–45. Our screening also checks thyroid, iron, vitamin and general health markers that cause similar symptoms.

Before you book
Do I need to be definitely perimenopausal to book this?
No. This screening is designed for anyone wanting clarity — whether your periods have started changing, you suspect perimenopause, or you simply want a baseline check of your hormones and general health.
Will this tell me for certain whether I’m perimenopausal?
Hormone levels can fluctuate, especially during perimenopause, so blood results are interpreted alongside your symptoms and history by your GP — not in isolation. This is in line with NHS guidance, which notes a GP can usually confirm perimenopause from symptoms alone in most age groups.
Can you prescribe HRT if it’s appropriate?
Yes. If your GP feels HRT or another treatment is appropriate, this can be discussed and prescribed as part of your follow-up consultation, in line with NICE guidance.
How do I get my results?
All results are explained in a dedicated follow-up consultation with your GP, not sent through as a list of numbers without context.
I’m based in Perth, Fife or Angus — can I still book?
Absolutely. Many of our patients travel into our Dundee clinic from across Tayside and Fife, including Coupar Angus, St Andrews and Broughty Ferry.
