Meningitis Symptoms Explained by a GP: Early Warning Signs, How It Spreads, and When to Seek Help

Recent reports of meningitis cases among students in Kent have raised concern across the UK. Although meningitis is rare, it can become serious very quickly, which is why recognising symptoms early is so important.

In a recent educational video, Dr Sam Bandularatne, GP at OurGP, explains what meningitis is, how it spreads, and the warning signs people should watch for.

Meningitis is an infection affecting the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Viral meningitis is more common and often less severe, but bacterial meningitis can be life-threatening and requires urgent hospital treatment.

Early symptoms may include fever, severe headache, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and neck stiffness. In some cases the infection can spread into the bloodstream, leading to sepsis, a serious medical emergency.

Vaccination plays an important role in prevention. The MenB vaccine and MenACWY vaccine protect against several strains of meningococcal bacteria and are routinely offered in the UK.

Although meningitis is uncommon, understanding the symptoms and seeking urgent medical help when needed can save lives
